The Client & The Challenge

Tesco PLC is a British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer headquartered in England, United Kingdom. It is the third largest retailer in the world measured by profits.

Sub-contractors for Tesco throughout the UK and Ireland had to attend a 4 hour long classroom based induction course prior to being allowed on site. Tesco found it difficult to access accurate information on who had to be inducted. With a huge number of sub-contractors, it was also difficult for Tesco to deliver a consistent message that would retain learners attention. Tesco were eager to explore new opportunities as to how they could improve this training.

The Solution

Olive Learning created a multi-device, video-led set of courses for 14,000 Tesco contractors. The award-winning project provided creative and practical solutions for compliance and literacy challenges.

These video based, online courses included knowledge checks throughout using question banks, actual site footage, voice overs and presenters to help improve learner engagement and comprehension. Learners hard of hearing or with English as a second language, had the option to read about the course material. By clicking on the “i” button an informative blurb would appear on screen.

Additional Features & Benefits

The App is SCORM compliant and the courses provided were accredited by ROSPA, the UK’s leading third-party certification body.

“Newscasts” sent news, tips and video safety alerts to contractors via push notifications which encourage engagement and have 90% open rates versus 23% for email communication.

Using the Tesco App, forms could be digitally submitted to help streamline the admin process. There were a number of forms created including PPE/Signage forms.

The Outcome

The training resulted in a consistent safety message being delivered to all Tesco sub-contractors and the training time been reduced from 4 hours to 45 minutes.  The enrolment is held electronically in the Olive Learning Management System; Academy HQ which is available on smartphones, tablets or pcs. Each individuals enrolment is accessible by all Tesco Site Administrators by the use of a QR code, that once scanned, brings up the training records of the individual.

Tesco have seen a significant reduction in site accidents and injury with 0 reportable incidents (RIDDOR). Subscription numbers now top 20,000 operatives and are rising with all major work-streams now enrolled. Over 13,000 contractors took the course and increased compliance scores from 50% to 90% on inspections.
